Melasma (sun damage)
IPL, “Intense Pulse Light” treatment has proven to be extremely effective at improving melasma (sun damaged skin.) This technology uses light that is UV-safe and has no known side effects to achieve a clearer and more even skin tone.
This is good for:
-Reducing or removing brown marks in small and larger areas caused by sun damage
-Giving a clearer and more even skin tone
The light energy emitted during the treatment is attracted to dark pigmentation which create the melanin age spots. The pigmentation is destroyed by the heat that is generated.
Intense pulsed or IPL is a method of skin treatment and rejuvenation which uses light-based energy to improve the appearance of the skin.
It selectively heats and damages specific targets in the skin without disrupting the surface. The treatment is sometimes called a “photo facial”. IPL is good for Reducing Solar Lentigo, Sun Spots, Pigmentation. Areas which can be treated are; face, neck, décolleté, arms and legs.
Following skin cleansing, a cool conducting gel is applied to the area to be treated.
The treatment is then delivered through a sapphire tipped rectangular block.
Some patients liken the experience to that of an elastic band ‘snap’.
Immediately after treatment the skin is cooled as it can feel quite warm. Any pigmented age spots tend to darken and fall off within a few days.
Immediately after an IPL Photofacial you can expect slight redness/blotchiness for about 30 minutes.
The melasma or hyper-pigmented areas will darken for the next 3-5 days as the dark spots are being lifted to the skins surface. After a few more days, spots are faded or gone completely.
Treatment may be mildly uncomfortable and the skin may be red and slightly swollen, feeling a little warm after treatment. Very rarely a small blister may appear. The skin may appear temporarily lighter or darker than untreated skin. For most people these slight side effects quickly disappear. Typically around five treatments which are done over five months will achieve best results.
